In 22 years as the head of global strategy, I have opened opportunities, nurtured relationships with partners, established streamlined policies, and developed strong teams while managing risk, compliance and foreign government relations. I was the first to open global operations in four distinct organizations.

University of California, Irvine

Chief Global Affairs Officer

 

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a research-intensive university with 25,000 employees, 38,000 students, 15 academic schools, $653 million in annual research funding, a $2.7 billion budget, and five Nobel prize laureates (2023 data).

 

I transformed the enterprise as founding leader of the first global affairs office. Successfully balanced change-management and growth. Research and analysis informed priority actions. Crafted and adapted strategy as international competence developed within the organization. Built administrative infrastructure. Developed efficient policies and streamlined procedures. Targeted communication strategies for the organization and for international audiences. Invested in relationships and human capital. Effectively mitigated risk. 

  

Funding from international sources has doubled, publications with international co-authors increased by 30%, and students participating in study abroad has grown by 120%. 

 

July 2010 – October 2014

Seattle University

 Associate Provost for Global Engagement

 

Hired to be the university’s first senior international officer. Designed and launched global strategy. Established unified processes to empower faculty and minimize risk. Built effective organizational structure including professional staff, cross-functional committees, faculty leadership. Ensured campus-wide ownership through systematic mapping of existing activities and understanding of organizational culture. Built collaborative partnerships with deans and key leaders across campus. Established ties to local partners for fundraising. University of Texas at San Antonio, College of Business

 Associate Dean, International Relations (2008 – 2010)

 

First associate dean for international relations. Performed comprehensive resource and program assessment. Designed international strategy aligned with college and university goals. Designed funding and staff infrastructure. Transformed program offerings. Developed faculty competencies and partnerships. Negotiated and coordinated with University of Texas system for policy and funding. Cultivated local and international partners – businesses and universities. Increased annual engagement from 30 to 600 business students.

 

Director, MBA International (2006 – 2010)

Coordinated with seven academic departments to redesign and launch an advanced business degree program. Designed budget and resource strategies as well as curriculum.

 

Director, Business Studies for the Americas (2005 – 2007)

Responsible for student, faculty and professional programs involving Latin America. Expanded activities from one immersion program involving five students annually to multiple programs that engaged 500 students each year. Programs included: Bilingual Business Certificate in Spanish, Global Business Club student association, immersion program in Brazil, International Seminars featuring visiting faculty, Strategies for the Border Corridor – a US-Mexico business course.

 Associate Dean, International Relations (2002-2004)

 

            Responsible for all international relations of a top-five business school in South America including student exchange programs, intercultural curriculum design, international research initiatives, faculty development, joint degrees, partnerships with international schools, and initiatives with corporate partners. Restructured international activities of the school across multiple departments to improve efficiency. Expanded exchange programs to provide opportunities in Europe, Asia, North America and South America for 400 students each year. Developed international training that attracted 300 foreign students and           executives annually. Established a faculty development program that provided skills and materials for foreign professors teaching about Latin American business. Initiated efforts that made FGV-EAESP the first school in Latin America to earn the “triple-crown” business school accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA).    

         

South America Director, OneMBA, international executive MBA (2001-2004)

With partner schools, designed groundbreaking four-continent MBA focused on international management. Coordinated activities of FGV-EAESP with partner schools in Mexico, the U.S., the Netherlands, and China to develop common curriculum, policies, budget, and marketing. Program, dubbed by media as a “super-alliance,” is recognized internationally for its global integration and innovation.

                                                                                              

Brazil Representative, SUMAQ, EU-Latin America business school alliance (2002-2004)

Represented FGV-EAESP in eight-country partnership focused on cross-continental academic research and advanced business training for executives of multinational corporations. Provided vision and leadership for SUMAQ Summit, an annual conference on Latin American business strategies that is the flagship program of the alliance.
